Written by Josh Franzen

Who can use this feature?

👤 Organizations Owners, Admins, Group Admins and custom roles with the "Remotely View Device File System", "Remotely Download Files from the File System", and "Remotely Delete Files from the File System" permissions.
🚩 Available on the Essential, Classroom Pro, and Enterprise Plans.

Overview

Remotely view the file structure of devices directly from the ArborXR web portal. This gives you instant visibility into log files, user-generated data, and any other stored information. You can also download specific files to your computer and remotely delete them. This level of granular control helps you troubleshoot deployment issues, retrieve logs and data for investigation, manage storage limits, and clean up residual data, all without ever needing to physically touch the headset.

Steps to Download Files from a Device

  1. Navigate to a device.

  2. Click Remote Control & Assist.

  3. Click View & Download Files.

  4. Find the file you want, click the three dot more options icon, and select Request Download.

  5. The device prepares the file and uploads it to ArborXR. You can track progress in the Downloads tab of the file system drawer, which shows each request with its status (preparing, ready, or failed), the file path, who requested it, and a download action.

  6. ArborXR emails you when the file is ready. Click Download in the email or in the Downloads tab to save it.

💡 Files are delivered as a .zip, even for a single file, so the download is one predictable artifact regardless of the original file type.

Steps to Delete Files

  1. Navigate to a device.

  2. Click Remote Control & Assist.

  3. Click View & Download Files.

  4. Find the file you want, click the three dot more options icon, and select Delete.

💡 Files installed using ArborXR are marked with the ArborXR logo on their file icon and cannot be deleted directly through the file system viewer. To remove these files from your device, you must uninstall them via ArborXR.

Disable Remote File Downloads

If your organization does not want anyone downloading files off devices, an org Owner or Admin can turn the capability off for the entire tenant. Go to Organization Settings, find Remote File Downloads, and switch it off.

When it is off, no one in your organization can request or download files, regardless of their role or permissions. Turning it off also cancels any in-progress requests and removes files that have already been prepared, so access to previously downloaded copies is revoked, not just hidden. Viewing the file system and deleting files are not affected.

An org Owner or Admin can turn it back on at any time.

FAQs

Which files can I view, download, and delete?

If a file is visible in the file system viewer, you can download or delete it. Files in protected system directories, such as the Android/data folder, are not visible in ArborXR and cannot be downloaded. This is due to restrictions in Android 11 and newer that prevent MDM solutions like ArborXR from accessing these locations.

Can I use the file system viewer when a device is offline?

Yes. You can view the file system, request a download, and delete files while a device is offline. The file system shown reflects the last successful sync. Deletions and download requests are queued and complete the next time the device connects. A download only makes progress while the device is online.

Why can't I download or delete certain files marked with the ArborXR logo?

Files installed through ArborXR are marked with the ArborXR logo on their file icon. They cannot be downloaded or deleted from the file system viewer. To remove them from your device, uninstall them via ArborXR.

How long is a file available to download?

A prepared file is available for 30 days after its first download, or 60 days if it is never downloaded.

Why did my download fail?

A download can fail if the file no longer exists on the device, the file changes while it is being prepared, or the device runs out of storage. Request the file again to retry.
