Provision Wi-Fi to Devices During Enrollment

Compare the ways to get Wi-Fi onto devices during enrollment, including Configuration Packages, the Device Setup App, QR codes, and Meta's Horizon Device Setup app.

Overview

Devices need Wi-Fi before they can check in with ArborXR, download apps and files, and receive settings. You can provision Wi-Fi as part of enrollment so the device connects on its own, with no manual network entry in the headset.

The method you use depends on the device and on whether the PC running enrollment has internet access.

Before You Start

Every method below draws from the same source: your Wi-Fi configuration presets.

  1. Create Wi-Fi configuration presets for the networks your devices will use.

  2. Add the presets to the group the devices will be enrolled into.

šŸ’” Add Wi-Fi to the group even if you plan to provision it another way. Group Wi-Fi is applied to devices on an ongoing basis, so devices pick up new networks after enrollment as well.

Non-Quest Devices

Applies to PICO, HTC VIVE, Magic Leap, Samsung Galaxy XR, XREAL, RealWear, Vuzix, Play for Dream MR, HMS SiNGRAY, phones, and tablets.

Option 1: Configuration Package

A Configuration Package is a .zip file generated from a group that bundles apps, files, Wi-Fi networks, and device settings for delivery over USB-C. Use this when the enrollment PC has no internet access, or when you want to avoid downloading content over Wi-Fi after devices come online.

  1. Add your Wi-Fi configuration presets to the group.

  2. In the group, go to Settings > Enrollment, then under Configuration Packages click Build New.

  3. Select the Wi-Fi network(s) to include, along with any apps, files, and settings, then click Generate.

  4. Download the package from the email notification or from the Enrollment tab.

  5. Copy the package to the enrollment PC, launch the Device Setup App, and select Provision with Configuration Package.

  6. Select the configuration package from your system file browser.

  7. Once the configuration package has been extracted, select the checkbox for your device then click Set Up.

Option 2: Device Setup App, Enroll Directly to a Group

Enroll the device into an existing group and the group's settings, including Wi-Fi, are provisioned to the device over USB-C as part of setup.

  1. Add your Wi-Fi configuration presets to the group.

  2. Download and install the Device Setup App, then log in and select your organization.

  3. Connect the device to the PC via USB-C.

  4. Select the checkbox for your device, then click Set Up.

  5. Choose Device Group as the setup method and select the group. Choosing Enroll Only instead of Device Group adds the device to your dashboard without applying any group settings, so no Wi-Fi is provisioned.

  6. Click Set Up.

šŸ’” Two requirements for this method:

  • Wi-Fi must already be assigned to the group before you run setup. Wi-Fi added to the group afterward is provisioned remotely instead, which requires the device to already be online.

  • The Device Setup App requires a login, so the enrollment PC must be online.

Option 3: QR Code

A QR code generated from a group contains both the enrollment credentials and a Wi-Fi payload. Scanning it during out-of-box setup enrolls the device and connects it to Wi-Fi in one step, with no PC tether required. However, QR code enrollment supports personal and open Wi-Fi networks only. Enterprise networks are not compatible and will not appear as an option. Use a Configuration Package or group enrollment for enterprise Wi-Fi.

  1. In the group, go to the Enrollment tab and under QR Codes click Build New.

  2. Under Wi-Fi Network (Optional), select an existing Wi-Fi configuration preset, or choose Enter Wi-Fi information manually.

  3. Click Create, then download or expand the QR code for scanning.

Meta Quest Devices

šŸ’” Wi-Fi is configured in Meta's Device Setup app, not in ArborXR. Configure it once in the app's Settings and it applies to every device you enroll from that PC.

Meta's Device Setup app provisions the Wi-Fi network to Quest devices automatically during enrollment.

  1. Complete Steps 1 and 2 of Enroll Meta Quest Devices through Horizon Managed Services: create the enrollment file in ArborXR and create the third-party enrollment in Horizon managed services.

  2. Log in to the Horizon managed services Device Manager, go to Managed Devices > Enroll Devices, and select In the Device Setup app.

  3. Download and install the Setup app for Windows or macOS, then log in.

  4. Click the 3-dot more options icon in the bottom left and select Settings.

  5. Configure the Device Language and Network details. This provisions the Wi-Fi network to devices during enrollment.

  6. Connect the device via USB, put it into fastboot mode, select your third-party MDM configuration, then click Enroll.
