Overview
Meta Quest devices previously enrolled in ArborXR using the Device Setup App are considered consumer devices. These devices won’t receive the latest features available through Meta Horizon managed services such as controller battery life reporting, remote shut down, and account-free Shared Mode.
Previously, registering consumer Meta Quest devices already enrolled in ArborXR with HMS required undergoing a manual factory reset and re-enrollment, a time-consuming process. Now, using this feature, you can register your consumer Meta Quest devices with Horizon managed services (HMS) without a factory reset or re-enrollment. This feature allows you to seamlessly register devices at your convenience, whether you want to register a few or all of them.

Requirements & Limitations
Requirements
HMS licenses: Your organization must have enough active HMS licenses for the devices you are registering.
Minimum OS version: Devices must be on Horizon OS v76 or later.
Limitations
Shared Mode: Registering devices with HMS configures them to Shared Mode. Registering to Individual Mode is not supported by Meta. See Shared Mode and Individual Mode for more information on these two modes.
App Store Access: The Meta Horizon Store cannot be accessed in Shared Mode and apps previously downloaded from the Meta Horizon Store will be removed during registration.
Pros and Cons of Registering with HMS
Pros
Advanced Device Management: ArborXR’s approved MDM integration with HMS unlocks deeper controls (like controller battery reporting, extensive controls for shared mode, and faster bug resolution).
No Meta Accounts: Use devices in Shared Mode without Meta accounts, eliminating issues like re-authentication codes.
Future App Store Access: Integration with Meta’s managed app store is coming soon, letting you remotely install managed app store apps directly from ArborXR. Learn more.
Cons
Pricing for ArborXR and Horizon managed services is separate. The published price of a HMS license for an existing device (a consumer device being registered with HMS) is $179.99 per device, per year.
Registering devices with HMS configures them to Shared Mode. When a device is in Shared Mode, you cannot access the Meta Horizon Store. Any apps already installed from the store will be uninstalled during registration.
⚠️ We understand you may not be ready to register, given the added costs of HMS and the loss of access to the consumer app store. The registration is optional.
Steps to Register
Log in to Horizon managed services.
Navigate to Apps & Content.
Select the Invite Developer tab.
Copy the organization ID by clicking Copy ID.
Log in to ArborXR.
Navigate to organization Settings.
Toggle on the Register Consumer Meta Quest with Horizon Managed Services feature.
Navigate to Devices & Groups then click Unregistered Meta Devices.
Select the devices you wish to register then click Register in HMS.
Paste your HMS organization ID from Step 4.
Click Register.
What to Expect After Registration
If you initiate the registration on devices running OS v76 or higher, they will display a Registration Initiated status. Once they come online and complete the registration, they will no longer appear in the Unregistered Meta Devices page.
If you initiate the registration on devices running OS v75 or lower, they will display a Waiting for OS Update status. These devices will not migrate until they have updated to OS v76 or higher.
ArborXR will automatically create an enrollment file within Settings > Enrollment Files titled ArborXR System HMS Enrollment File.
Likewise, Meta will automatically create a corresponding Third-Party MDM within HMS titled ArborXR Migration Generated.
The devices will be configured to Shared Mode. The in-headset experience may change depending on their previous setup in ArborXR:
If your devices were already using an ArborXR kiosk experience (ArborXR Home, Kiosk Mode, or In House Launcher), you won't notice any changes to the device interface.
If your devices were using the native Meta Home Environment (Device Home Environment), the interface will switch to the Meta Shared Mode launcher. This launcher is a simpler version of the Meta Home Environment and does not include features like the app store, browser, or social functions.
How to Check If a Device Was Successfully Registered
After initiating the registering of your devices, you can verify the status of the registration using the following methods:
Check the Unregistered Devices Page: A successfully registered device will no longer appear in the Unregistered Meta Devices page.
Check HMS Mode Attribute: Look at the device's attributes. The HMS Mode attribute will update to display Shared Mode instead of N/A.
Please reach out to support@arborxr.com if you observe an error with the migration.
